Cake Day 2009

The same place, the same people, but 2 years later. Class VIII2 and I had a sort of farewell party on 27 May. During the double period of English, we listened to some old CDs, played games, ate some delicious home-made sweets, and really enjoyed every minute.

No wonder everyone felt like singing a well-known song called 'Sausages with ice-cream':

My favourite animal (article)

Polar bears live in the Arctic. They have got white thick fur, strong legs and a black nose. They live a lonely life.
Polar bears usually eat fish, seals and whales. They can live without eating even three months. Their only real enemy is a man.
Polar bears can hunt and swim very well. They are about 2.5 meters tall and weigh about 250-770 kilograms. People hunt them, because they have got expensive fur and meat. They live about 15-18 years.

Aleksa Konstantinov, V2, 18 May 2009

My favourite animal is a crocodile.
Crocodiles are dark brown. They can run fast and sometimes jump for food.
Crocodiles eat meat. They usually have sixty-eight sharp teeth. Their food goes straight into their stomachs. Crocodiles never clean their teeth.
Crocodiles are often four meters long.
I like crocodiles because they look strong.

I like many animals, but my favourite animals are cats.
My cat’s name is Betty and she’s snowy white. Betty has blue eyes and she’s very cute.
She lives in a cat house with her brother Čupko.
Betty eats grains, meat and fish.
She can do tricks and catch butterflies.
Betty has many friends. She likes to relax in her basket and watch TV. Sometimes she likes to play with my finger and when I toss her in the air.
Betty is a clever little kitten and she’s one year old.

Butterflies. Everybody loves to see that wonderful insect. It is so small, but so beautiful.
There are white, brown and colourful butterflies. They fly from flower to flower. They eat pollen and nectar.
They are so fast that only a few people can catch them.
Butterflies live in our gardens, in the parks and forests.
In the spring there are a lot of them.
They live only one day, but that is enough to show us their beauty.

Penguins are funny little birds. They have wings, but they can’t fly. Instead, they use their wings as flippers to paddle in the water. They are excellent swimmers.
Most penguins live in the ice-covered continent of Antarctica.
They have long bodies, short legs and they can stand upright. Penguins have dark backs and white fronts that make them look like men in tuxedos. They look like people at a fancy party. Male and female penguins form couples to raise young penguins.
They live about twenty years.
Penguins are cute animals and I like them.

When I finish school... (essay)

It’s daytime. I’m sitting on a school chair thinking about my future. It’s so complicated. I haven’t got anything on my mind.

I’m not living in the future. Everything I care about is today. My friends are thinking about some life abroad. They want to be film stars, singers, players, but I don’t care. Maybe I want to become a basketball player, but it’s just a dream. Now, when I look at them, they all look the same, ordinary kids, but maybe some of them will be who knows what. This life and all is stupid to me.

When I finish school, start to work and meet some girl, I hope everything will be different.

Friends (essays)

Almost everyone has got many friends, but just few friends are the best. They help you in trouble, laugh with you and spend time with you.
I’ve got three best friends. They are Ivana, Dijana and Smiljana. This time I’ll describe Ivana.
Ivana is a tall, fourteen-year-old girl, who lives in Kikinda and is in the same class with me. She has got straight, brown hair and brown eyes. When she reads, she wears glasses. She is a pretty, friendly and gorgeous girl who has a younger sister. In her free time, Ivana likes listening to music (pop, rock and r’n’b), going rollerblading, sleeping or hanging out with her best friends. She also likes going shopping or to a café with us.
Ivana’s favourite colours are red and black, and she would like to have a tattoo. When she grows up she wants to be a psychologist or a translator.
Ivana is very direct and sincere. She likes helping people – when I need some help, she is there for me. She is very friendly and likes making new friend. But she is very stubborn and panicky. When she has a test, especially Maths test, she gets into a panic, a lot, and then she makes a lot of stupid mistakes.Ivana likes sport, too. She used to play volleyball and tennis, and do karate, but not anymore.
Ivana is my best friend, because she is great, loves having a lot of fun and laughing and she always tells me what she thinks. It is beautiful to have a friend like her, because she is always there when I need her.
Everyone should have friends like Dijana, Ivana and Smiljana, because they are really the best friends for life.

Aleksandra Kantar, May 2009

I have got many friends. I have met them in many different places: at school, on volleyball trainings, in music school, in my neighbourhood. They are all very important to me, and I am sad because I do not have enough time to be with them as much as I would like to. Although I often say that they are all my best friends, I actually have just one best friend. Her name is Ivana.
We have known each other since we were babies. Now we go to the same school and class – we even sit at the same desk. People often say that somebody must have the same interests as you to be your best friend. I think that is not true. Ivana and I are very different – that is the secret of our ‘long lasting’ friendship.
Ivana is my best friend, but I do not go everywhere with her. I have a friend for everything – for talking about serious things, for talking about boys, for parties…
Unfortunately, I do not have any male friends. All my friends are girlfriends. It is mostly like that with the girls of my age. I hope that it will not be like that when I grow older.
Although my friends are the same age as me, I like being with younger girls, too. They always ‘fresh me up’ with their stories and their own problems. It is because I sometimes want to get away from my friends and from the stories that have already been told for a hundred times. I like listening about the people I do not know very well. It sometimes makes me change my opinion about them and it makes me ask myself if they are really like the others show them.
I like meeting new people. It is interesting, exciting and challenging. That is why I am looking forward to attending new school the next school year.

Dunja Ilić, May 2009

I have got four best friends. Aleksandra, Dijana, Smiljana and Jelena are the people I most like to spend time with. I am going to describe Aleksandra.
Aleksandra is tall, with long, brown hair and brown eyes. She is very thin. Aleksandra cannot eat sweets or anything which contains sugar, because she is a diabetic. I am very sorry for her.
Aleksandra is always there for me when I ask for her help. She is very generous, nice and polite. I owe her a lot, honestly. She is also very friendly. She likes going out and hanging out with us. Her flaw is that she is very nervous. She easily gets mad, and at some stupid things. When we have exams she is always scared that she has not learned the lesson very well, but she knows that she has.
In her free time, Aleksandra likes reading books, rollerblading and listening to music. Her favourite types of music are r ’n’ b and pop, and her favourite singers are Rihanna, Britney Spears and Enrique Iglesias.
Aleksandra likes going shopping. I can freely say that she is a shopping-maniac. When we go shopping, she buys almost everything she can.
She also likes watching sports, like volleyball and tennis. Two years ago she played volleyball, but not any more.
It is very important to have friends, because they will always be there for you, and I know that Aleksandra, Dijana, Smiljana and Jelena will always be there when I need them.

Ivana Grubišić, May 2009

I have many friends, but many girlfriends. I have some friends at school, in my street, on the volleyball team... My best friends are Dunja Ilić, Milica Bozitovac and Ivana Vuletić. I spend my free time with them.
Ivana is fourteen years old and she was born in December. She is of medium height, with short, straight, brown hair.
She has a very pretty smile. She is also very moody, intelligent and interesting.
Ivana has been playing the piano for five years. She is good at school, too. I go to school with her and visit her nearly every day.
Dunja has short, black hair and black eyes. She is of medium height and very pretty.
She plays volleyball and the piano. She is very good at school, especially Serbian and English.
She is a very good sportsperson, too. We play on the same volleyball team.
Dunja is a very good friend who always helps me.
Milica is fifteen years old. She was born in May. She has long, black hair and black eyes. She is as tall as Dunja.
Milica is a great girl! Her favourite colours are orange, yellow and green. She likes being a good-looking girl. She is very good at English, too. She often goes rollerblading with me. She is very cute and caring.
I like my best friends very much, because they are kind and always help me.

Katarina Marojkin, May 2009

Real friends are people who are there when you need them. I have three such friends: Dijana, Aleksandra and Ivana. But, my best friend is Dijana.
She is short, with brown eyes. Her hair is long and brown. She cares a lot about her hair. She does not like it when somebody touches it. If that happens she gets nervous and starts yelling.
Dijana is willing to help me whenever I need her help. But she often gets nervous (because I cannot understand her).
She is a very friendly person. She likes to hang out and meet new friends. When I am ill, she always brings me the homework and explains me the things I do not understand.
She loves animals and she has two cats called Caca and Tasha at home. She cares a lot about them.
When she grows up she wants to be a vet. Once, when she found an injured cat, she took her home and gave her food and something to drink.
Dijana’s biggest fear is a high place. When we were at our friend Tanja’s apartment, Dijana was looking down at the street from the balcony, her leg slipped and she almost fell, but I caught her, just in time. Since then she has been afraid of heights.
We have a lot of things in common: we both love animals, we share the same fear, we listen to the same kind of music, and so on.
Dijana is simply my best friend, dear, interesting, funny...
She is an example of a good friend. I do not know what I would do without her.
It is beautiful to have friends.

A Strange Dream (story)

‘Boris, time for bed.’ I turned off the TV and went to bed.

‘Boris, wake up!’ I was very tired. I opened my eyes. Everything was white. ‘This isn’t my room,’ I thought.

I went downstairs. A strange looking robot was making breakfast. I looked at the calendar. The year was 3029. I asked the robot where my mum was. He said that she went to the store. I wanted to go out to see what was happening. I opened the door. Everything was flying. I quickly closed the door.

I was stuck home with the stupid robot whose only ability was to cook. Suddenly, two criminals broke into the house. They took me and the robot to the basement. We were tied up. The robot suddenly untied itself with its cooking abilities. It helped me, too. Luckily it was a home security robot, too.

In the evening my mum and dad came back. The police took away the two criminals.
‘Boris, wake up.’ I jumped out of my bed. I looked at the calendar and everything was fine.

Republic Foreign Languages Competition 2009

I am proud to say that Dunja Ilić, VIII2, my most gifted English language student, took part in the Republic Foreign Languages Competition on 16 May 2009, in Surčin. It was a perfect opportunity for her to check her knowledge and show how much she knows. And, she handled everything really well.

The exam consisted of 3 parts: reading and listening comprehension tests, and a grammar test.

My Favourite Person (essays)

Write an article about a person you admire.
  • Who is it?  How do you know this person?
  • What does this person do?
  • What does he/she look like?
  • What is that person like?
  • Why do you admire him/her?
Hmmm... I admire Bob Marley, Superman, Spiderman, Nikola Tesla, but the person I admire most is my mother.

Her name is Mara. She is a forty-two-year old, short, and a little bit fat woman. Her eyes are brown. Her hair was once brown, too, but now it is black. She dyes her hair because it has become grey. Why? She is getting older, and we, my brother and me, aren’t very good sons. We have cost her wrinkles on her forehead and a lot of tears and bad yellow minutes. After all, she says that we are good sons and I love that. I love the moment when she tells me that she is proud of me, and that she loves me. She has said that more and more rarely to me, because I have become bad. ’What can I do? You’re in the process of growing,’ she says. Huh, yes...

And, then, the fight... After a few hours we meet half-way and make peace.

My mother is very caring and good. She always says that I must be better at everything, like school, sport and my behaviour. She also says that I must be honest and brave, and things like that. Those are in fact her best qualities.

I love my mother because she is always there for me, to help and to teach. She is the person I admire most.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (reading activities)

This is a story about two different sisters. The older one is called Elinor and she represents sense, and the younger one is called Marianne, who represents sensibility.

Elinor is sensible, calm, clever and she hardly ever expresses her feelings. When Elinor finds out that Edward Ferrars, her secret true love, is engaged with another woman, she keeps her pain for herself. Behind her coldness, there is hidden sensibility and a big heart, which belongs to Edward.

Elinor is a generous person, too. She is nice, polite and everybody loves her. Elinor is the smartest in the family. She advises her mother and sisters to make some decisions. She takes care of them and we can see that when Marianne gets ill.

On the other hand, Marianne is sensitive, full of passionate and romantic feelings. She likes having fun and partying all night long. She cannot understand how Elinor can be so cold and not express her feelings.

Marianne believes that true love can only be felt by the young. When she meets Mr Willoughby, who is romantic and passionate just like her, she falls in love with him. The time that she spends with him is the most pleasant and romantic time she has ever had. When Mr Willoughby comes to Marianne to say goodbye to her, because he has to leave the town and Devonshire, Marianne reacts passionately and refuses to talk to him. Here we can see that she is different from Elinor who would probably stay calm at this.

There is also Colonel Brandon, a middle-aged man, who likes Marianne. Is he going to conquer Marianne’s heart?

I liked the book very much. The characters are very interesting and complicated people.
