My House

Although our Class 1 books only cover one room — the bedroom with its furniture (bed, desk, chair) — I always introduce the whole house and some typical things we can find there.

As usual, with this generation of Class 1 pupils, we talked about where the children live, in a flat or a house, whether their house was big or small, and whether certain rooms were upstairs or downstairs. Then, I drew the rooms one by one on the board and invited them to do the same in their notebooks. They followed the example, repeated the words, and later coloured the rooms in any way they liked.

To check how much they remembered, I asked them to say where each item was and what colour it was. Since young learners enjoy drawing, colouring, and talking about their possessions, they always find these lessons a lot of fun.

As a followup, we learned a song where different members of a family were in different rooms of the house, doing different things.
