European Day of Languages 2025

 This year, we marked the European Day of Languages with a variety of interactive and creative activities designed to spark curiosity, teamwork, and imagination.

My Class 2 pupils learned greetings and how to say “peace” in Italian, Greek, and Turkish with help from their peers across Europe. They also created a mini video dictionary United in Peace and joined a memory game with flags.

Older pupils went on a virtual journey across Europe, discovering fun facts about different countries. The most creative ones wrote poems in English and translated the song “Voices of Europe”, composed for this year’s celebration.

The main event took place on 2 October in the school canteen, where Class 5 pupils, divided into five mixed teams, took part in quizzes on general knowledge and languages. They performed a choreography to the song “Voices of Europe”, a scene from the musical “Letter by Letter”, and a short sketch about cases called “The Toreador and the Bull.”

This was our 15th celebration at school and the 25th across Europe — a joyful reminder of how languages enrich our world and bring people closer together. As always, the activity is part of the Council of Europe's Event Calendar.

European Day of Languages 2024

This year's celebration of languages was packed with various activities.

My Class 1 pupils sang the If you're happy song in Serbian to their eTwinning friends and learned a few basic words in their languages.

My Class 4 pupils received the Talk to me stickers, used the key to find out the languages, and tried to find the countries on the map.

They also recorded video messages for their eTwinning friends.

Divided into 6 mixed teams of 3, my Class 5 pupils took part in fun quizzes about languages. Their task was to listen to 5 different people talking and guess the languages in a game called Look who's talking!, recognise fun facts in the general knowledge quiz, or choose a category and answer some trivia questions. A few volunteers said a few sentences in Romani, Spanish, German and Japanese and the others guessed the languages. We also sang a well-known song If you're happy in English.

They also took part in the brainstorming activity with our eTwinning friends and shared their favourite L1 words.

As usual, the activity is part of the Council of Europe's Event Calendar.

What's the weather like?

A lesson filled with various games always turns out to be a success.

First, with the help of flashcards, we revised weather words. I asked my pupils about the weather outside, what kind of weather they like and don't like, why, and what we usually wear then.

After that, we drew a mind map, with weather symbols and I asked the volunteers to write the words. Everyone also wrote the sentences about what kind of weather they like and don't like in their notebooks, and a few pupils read their sentences.

Later, we read the story about the Sun and Wind together and did the quiz. Finally, I asked them to make groups of four for the station rotation activity. I reminded them what it means and distributed different tasks, all related to the weather topic: dominoes, popsicle sticks with parts of sentences, crossword, online matching game on the tablet and online hangman on the laptop.

The groups were a bit noisy, some finished faster than the others, and everyone enjoyed all the activities.

And the Oscar goes to...!

One of the first activities of the eTwinning project And the Oscar goes to...! started with a teacher from Spain was logo creation. As usual, my older pupils enjoyed it a lot.

We've also collaborated with our partners from Spain on the online quiz about Oscar winners.

Places in a town

We started the lesson with a short warm-up. I asked my Class 5 pupils to name different buildings according to where they are on the poster.

Then, we talked about their favourite places around our town, why and how often they go there, and who with.

We did a few writing and speaking tasks in the books, and then the pupils decided which group they wanted to join for the station rotation activity. Each group had to finish their task before moving to the next station:

  • play an online game to check the spelling of a place;
  • read the description and stick different buildings where they belong;
  • order the dialogue and act out the situation in the street to practise giving directions;
  • play an online game to guess the correct place;
  • design your ideal neighbourhood.

It was a lot of fun.

The Day of the Dead

Our friends from California shared with us their traditions and creative works of art, and we prepared for them the quiz inspired by the animated film Coco:

Languages Celebration 2022

On Monday, 26 September, during the 4th lesson, we organised a special event for the representatives of each class, divided into 6 teams of 4 generations and named after different colours, with Look who's singing! and General Knowledge quizzes.

 Two girls read poems in Hungarian and Chinese, and three groups of Class 5 and Class 6 pupils sang a well-known nursery rhyme in French, English and German.

Our languages celebration is in the Council of Europe Event Calendar again, and voting for the most innovative event of the year is open until 20 October.

Walking around the USA

On the last day of May, a group of my Class 6 pupils joined the online meeting with our eTwinning friends from Spain, Poland and Turkey.

They shared what they learned about the USA, what they liked about the project, and played a Kahoot trivia quiz. It was a lot of fun.
