Sports and activities (essays)

My favourite sport is volleyball. I love it because it is a very exciting and interesting sport. I’ve played it for a year and a couple of months and I play it every day in elementary school ‘Jovan Popović.’
Volleyball has lots of advantages. To start with, it is very good for your health. Another good side is that you can meet a lot of new friends, just like me. I met my best friend on my first volleyball practice. Volleyball is also a very challenging and competitive sport. In addition, you can see a lot of new, interesting places and you can travel a lot.
However, volleyball has a few flaws. One of them is that you can easily get hurt. But if you hurt your leg or your arm, you can’t play.
It isn’t a very expensive sport. You only have to have good and comfortable trainers.
When I play volleyball I’m very happy and fulfilled. My dream is to be a successful volleyball player, become a volleyball coach or anything to deal with volleyball.

I want to describe my favourite sport, bowling.
Bowling is widely-spread in most countries, especially in the USA. It is a very interesting but strange sport for the people in our country. I’ve gone bowling for about two years. I bowl at my bowling club three times a week.
Bowling has a lot of good sides. To start with, it is good for your health. It is very competitive, exciting and safe for me.I like it because I enjoy spending my time bowling and I haven’t made a mistake with taking this sport. My body grows in the right direction thanks to this sport. It keeps me fit, too. You can also meet a lot of friends and travel to different places.
However, there are a few bad sides. It can be dangerous because you can get hurt. For example, you can pull a muscle, or sprain your wrist.
I love bowling because it is great fun. It is also a very competitive and interesting sport. It makes me feel excited, healthier and fitter.

My favourite sport is basketball. I love that sport because it is the most interesting for me. I played basketball three years at the Technical School, but on holiday I played it at my elementary school. I had trainings three times a week. Every other week we had a match.
Basketball is good for your health and growth and progress of your body. You can also make some new friends.
On the other hand, many sports are expensive, just like basketball. I stopped playing that sport because it is very expensive. The first time a membership was four hundred dinars, but later it was eight hundred dinars. From that time I haven’t played basketball at all. But five weeks ago I played basketball for my elementary school and we were the third on the tournament.
For equipment you must wear a T-shirt, shorts and trainers, and you need a basketball.
Basketball is my favourite sport because it is very interesting and competitive.

My favourite sport is tennis. I have practised it regularly for two and a half years. I have trainings three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
My coach’s name is Jole. He is very amusing and we have a lot of fun.
We are also very active. The boys and girls practise together. I love practising because it is fun, we are active and we usually never fight. But, sometimes we have a quarrel or two about the points and where the ball dropped. Another reason why I love training is because we always hang out together and we kid with each other.
I love tennis and I am going to continue training, firstly, because of my friends, and secondly, because I want to be better and improve myself in the future.

My favourite activity is folk dance. It’s very exciting and I danced for five years. Then I stopped for a few weeks but came back for one month. My practices were on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the ’Gusle’ Club. I stopped training because I didn’t have much free time, and I didn’t like my coach.
It isn’t a very expensive activity. You get all the equipment when you start to dance.
On trainings I made a lot of new friends, and on the competitions I met a lot of new people.
Folk dance is good for my health and recreation. It isn’t as competitive as football or basketball, but it is more interesting.
On the competitions you have to wear traditional costumes. Every coach has to create a choreography which you have to learn on practices. It’s good to learn the basics of folk dance, because you can perform it on the weddings or any other celebrations like that.
I love this activity because I like dancing and this is Serbian traditional dance. Even if I don’t practise it any more, I will always love to do the folk dance.

A Strange Dream (articles)

In my dream it was a rainy spring afternoon. I was having a nap. Suddenly, I heard a strange noise. I woke up and saw a little shiny ball. It was heading after me. I couldn’t move. I was just looking. Suddenly, I felt a pain in my back. Something started to grow. Those were wings. The shiny ball was a little fairy. Then she started flying. I started too. We were happy and… I woke up.

My favourite sport is football. It is exciting and thrilling.
I have played it since I was six. I play it with my friends.
Football is challenging and competitive. That is why I like it.
It is also dangerous because you can easily hurt yourself, like twist your ankle, pull a muscle or something like that.

Mihailo Kozomara, VI1, April 2010

My favourite sport is football. I think that football is competitive.
I have played it for five years. I play it at my football club.
Football is good for your health. You can also make a lot of friends.
However, it can be dangerous. You can break your leg. It is expensive, too. You need special shoes and kit, but it is paid well.

Aleksandar Petrović, VI1, April 2010

My favourite sport is soccer, because it is popular.
Soccer is a very challenging and competitive sport.
On the other side, it is very expensive, because of all the gear you must buy. You must have bone protectors, soccer boots and of course a ball for practice.
In this sport you can easily get hurt, because it is very dangerous. You can twist your ankle, break your leg, or even worse.
I love this sport because it is lots of fun and everybody plays it.

Stanislav Šegrt, VI1, April 2010

My favourite sport is karate. I really enjoy it.
I have done it for three and a half months now. It is fun, because you learn a lot of moves for only one hour. And I never get tired! Really rarely. You can meet a lot of new people there. Plus, it is challenging.
But, the bad thing is you can pull your muscles a bit. And it is expensive. The kimono costs around three thousand dinars. Or even more.
But, I love what I do.
By the way, I do karate in the sports centre every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
I really love martial arts, and my favourite one is karate!
See you soon!

Anđela Kovljenić, VI1, April 2010

My favourite sport is basketball. I’ve played basketball since I was eight. I go to the training sessions every weekdays, except Wednesday, from 6pm to 7.30pm. I think it is a very exciting sport.
Basketball has got a lot of good sides. It is good for your health and helps you to be fit. It is a very competitive and challenging sport.
However, there are some bad sides. There are all kinds of injuries, especially twisted ankle and pulled muscle. Also, some exercises are very boring.
Basketball makes me really happy and relaxed and I would recommend it to all.

Aleksa Konstantinov, VI2, April 2010

My favourite sport is tennis. It is a very challenging and exciting sport.
When I play tennis I feel very happy.
I have played it for two years, since 2008.
This sport has good sides, but also some bad ones.
The good side is that it is healthy and the heart of a tennis player is the most developed heart of all other sport players’.
The bad side is that the equipment is quite expensive. You need a racquet, tennis balls and a special outfit. There are also some injuries. You can twist your ankle, for example.
I have trainings on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Sometimes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I play it in a tennis club, but I am not a member of the club.
I like tennis because you must run a lot and I love to run. That is the main reason.

Filip Smiljanić, VI2, April 2010

My favourite sport is volleyball. I have trained it for two years. I like it very much.
I have trainings every weekend for 80 minutes. The training is fun but needs a lot of effort.
Sometimes volleyball can be dangerous. You can pull a muscle or twist your ankle, for example.
This sport is good for girls because they get a beautiful body.
I love this sport because it is challenging, exciting and thrilling.

Doroteja Čikić, VI2, April 2010

My favourite sport is basketball.
I started practising basketball three years ago. I practise basketball three times a week.
In my team there are many good players. We help each other.
I like the matches best. During the match I can show what I have learnt. The game is very exciting.
I’ve got some posters of my favourite basketball players. They are Mc Caleb and Roberts.
My dream is to become the best basketball player. I hope one day it will come true.

The Media (for-and-against articles)

Think about the advantages and disadvantages of different media. You may use the following ideas to write your article:
P1: Introduction - state topic
P2: Advantages and reasons
P3: Disadvantages and reasons
P4: Opinion
Don't forget to use the linking words, such as: First, Second, In addition (list/add points), For instance (introduce examples), However (show contrast), To sum up (conclude), etc.

TELEVISION

Television - we can watch a lot of interesting stuff on it, but is all that good?
To start with, there are a lot of channels on TV, not only from our country, but other countries as well. As a result, you have a bigger choice of programmes, films, TV series, different TV shows, and things like that.
However, TV can be bad for us because we spend a lot of time in front of it, instead of going outside with our friends. TVs are also very expensive, especially those with an excellent resolution.
All in all, we can find a lot of interesting and great stuff on TV, but we should learn to control ourselves.

THE INTERNET

A lot of people today have the Internet. They spend hours using it, but is this good or bad?
First, you can be in contact with your friends who live far away from you, chat with them, talk on the microphone, or watch them on your monitor via video camera. Second, you can search for information in other countries and regions. You can also listen to music or watch videos and films on the Internet.
However, the Internet can be dangerous for your computer. For example, somebody can hack or spam it with mail. Also, too much time in front of your computer is bad for your health.
To conclude, the Internet is a source of information around the world, but we need to use it sensibly.

MOBILE PHONES

Today, each man or woman has a mobile phone. Even younger people have it. It is very useful, but has a lot of flaws, too.
One positive side is that mobile phones are useful for communication. For example, you can talk to your friend who is in Spain or some other country. You can also do a lot of interesting things with mobile phones. You can listen to music, take some pictures or watch videos, for instance. Moreover, you can get some interesting information on it.
On the other hand, mobile phones are very expensive. They can also crash fast. Another flaw is that if a mobile phone falls down, it breaks, immediately. And when it breaks, its repair is very expensive. In addition, people lose interest in other, smarter things, because of mobile phones. In fact they spend a lot of time using them.
To sum up, you would not be able to do lots of interesting things without mobile phones, but you should use them more responsibly.

Animal Parade (song)

Here's another cute action song from our books, sung by my class II5 in March 2010.

The lyrics are as follows:
Chorus
Come and see the animals
Come and see the parade.

Here comes the elephant
With his funny nose
Come and see the elephant
With his funny nose!

Chorus

Here comes the monkey
With his funny face
Come and see the monkey
With his funny face!

Chorus

Here comes the crocodile
With his funny tail
Come and see the crocodile
With his funny tail!

Chorus
