HIPPO 2025 National Finals

 This year's National Finals for pupils from local schools were held at Đura Jakšić Primary School on 11 April. Just like last year, the contestants did their exams online.

Both my pupils did their best on the more challenging tests and, once again, made it to the orange list.

Hippo 3: Nikola Tomić, VII2 (Reading: 33/34, Writing: 24/40.5 - compared to the first on the list).

HIPPO 2025

 Two groups of my pupils took part in this year's preliminary round of the Contest organised on 10 March in Đura Jakšić Primary School.

Most pupils found the tests easy, especially the reading part, though some felt the use of English was too challenging.

This year, the application process and the Contest were organised under unusual circumstances, with fewer pupils participating than before. A lot of schools in our country, including ours, have suspended classes since 20 January due to widespread protests and teacher strikes. A few of my pupils who felt prepared, followed my advice and applied individually.

HIPPO 2024 National Finals

 This year's National Finals for pupils from local schools were held at Đura Jakšić Primary School on 19 April. For some reason, the contestants did their exams online which was a bit stressful.

Both my pupils did their best on more challenging tests and made it to the orange list, which means that they will be invited to the next round if some of the RQ candidates do not confirm their participation.

Hippo 1: Nina Stijelja, IV2 (Reading: 38/40, Writing 25.5/42 - compared to the first on the list),

Hippo 2: Nikola Tomić, VI2 (Reading: 33/34, Writing: 28.5/39 - compared to the first on the list).

Republic Foreign Languages Competition 2024

 Nearly 1,500 Class 8 pupils from different regions of Serbia took part in the Republic English language competition on 7 April in Belgrade.

Vanja tried his best to do reading (8/8) and listening (6/7) comprehension and grammar (19/30) tests, and qualify for the speaking test, but the grammar part was a bit challenging (missed 6 points), so he was not invited to the last round.

Nevertheless, it was a fantastic opportunity for him to meet new friends and hang out with them, walk along the famous pedestrian streets and round Kalemegdan Park, and visit the Uroš Predić – the Noble Essence of Everyday Life exhibition at the SASA Gallery showcasing artwork from various collections.

HIPPO 2024

 Three groups of my pupils, 15 of them, took part in this year's preliminary round of Hippo Olympiad. Both experienced competitors and those accepting this international language challenge for the first time agreed that the tests were easy, so we're looking forward to receiving good news in a few weeks.

The competition for local pupils was organised on 16 March in Đura Jakšić Primary School.

Regional Foreign Languages Competition 2024

Two of my oldest pupils were among 50 Class 8 pupils who took part in this year's Regional Foreign Languages Competition held on 10 March at Vuk Karadžić Primary School.

To our great surprise, nearly half of them (23) ended the competition in first 3 places.

With 37 points, Vanja won the second place, while, unfortunately, Ognjen had 30 points which were not enough for the State Competition.

The types of tasks were similar to the test in the previous round.

Municipal Foreign Languages Competition 2024

 Municipal Foreign Languages Competition took place on Sunday, 4 February 2024. Three of my oldest pupils took part, but, according to the new scoring system, two qualified for the next round. Vanja won the second place with 38 points and Ognjen won the third place with 36 points. Unfortunately, this year, 33 points were not enough for Nikola to join them.

Compared to the tests from previous years, this one was easier, with different types of questions:
- read the text and circle the correct answer (= comprehension questions);
- for each question (= short messages), circle the correct answer;
- for each question (= notice boards), choose the correct answer;
- read the text and circle the correct word for each space;
- complete the paragraph with the given words;
- complete the letter with one word in each gap.

HIPPO 2023 European Finals

 The European finals of the Hippo English Language Olympiad on 23 - 25 May in Jesolo, Italy, gathered 176 competitors from 22 countries.

This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to make new friends, play on the beach, solve challenges in a team Treasure Hunt around the resort, hang out and take photos with the mascot Ippo, try Italian specialties, as well as visit nearby Venice by boat and spend a wonderful afternoon exploring this special open-air museum.

My Class 5 pupil, Nikola Tomić, competed against 37 other peers from 18 countries and scored 30 points in the Hypo 1 category, 9 fewer than the first-placed girl from Bulgaria. The award ceremony was held at the Vivaldi Auditorium on 24 May.

Slingshot Challenge

 Lara has taken part in the National Geographic Slingshot Challenge and shared her solutions to the environmental problems in a one-minute video.

Although her video isn't among the finalists, I'm glad she's made this step towards the change.

Hello,
My name's Lara and I come from Serbia.
Today, I'm going to talk to you about global issues. As you can see, here are some notes that I'm going to use to present my plan.
Air, nature or water pollution, climate change and waste everywhere; these global issues are all connected.
Firstly, they are all caused by none other than humans!
How?, you may ask. Well, as you know and can see here, humans build factories. Factories make smoke which pollutes the air. They also throw out all kinds of toxic fluids into the rivers. After that, rivers flow into the seas, and the seas into the oceans. What's more, we use the same water that WE polluted to water the plants and as a drink.
Secondly, global issues cause numerous species to become endangered. Not to mention all kinds of diseases of both humans and animals.
One solution to these problems would be to put filters in factories so that they can clean the smoke before it goes into the atmosphere.
Another solution would be to build special pools that will clean the water before it goes into the rivers. If factories don't want to abide by these rules, then they should pay fines. If that doesn't help, then we should simply close the factories.
I hope that if we stick to it, we'll have a better, cleaner and greener planet.
Thank you for your attention!
