Extreme Weekend

Hi,
I did something really amusing this weekend,  I need to tell you about it.
My friends and I decided to go to the ocean beach. When we got there we saw a man renting surfboards so we decided to take three of them. I have never surfed in my life, but I guess there’s a first time for everything. We have rushed to the ocean immediately, then jumped on our boards. It was marvelous. We had so much fun at the beginning, but we got really exhausted. We wanted to go back, but then realized that something was swimming under us. It was a shark-like creature. We weren’t sure if it was actually a shark. My friend and I were frightened. It was swimming in circles and it was slowly getting near us. Then a lifeguard shouted: ”Don’t worry, it’s just a dolphin! It’s really friendly that’s why he’s swimming so close!” We then started swimming quickly towards the beach. We packed our stuff and headed home, laughing. We will probably remember that day forever.

Greetings from...

Dear Ana,
I hope you're fine. What's the weather like in Paris? Here in Kikinda it's sunny, and we're all preparing for Easter.
At the moment, I'm with my mum in the kitchen. we're making a lot of tasty cakes. Dad is outside with my baby brothers. They're preparing meat for the barbecue for our family and friends. My baby sister Tijana is making decorations for Easter.
Who are you with? What are they doing?
Have a good time!
Happy Easter!
Love,
your friend Ratka

Ratka Sokola, V1

Hi, Jovana,
What's up? How are you and your family? What are you doing?
I'm at the beach. My family and I are having fun here. I love swimming. When we're at the beach, I swim because it's healthy. My sister is sunbathing. She hates swimming, but sometimes she is in the sea. My mum is reading a book, because she loves reading. My dad is drinking water.
Later, we're going to a restaurant to have lunch. When lunch is over, we usually have a nap.
In the evening, we go for a walk. Then, we go to the same restaurant and have dinner. That's it.
Best wishes,
Aleksandra

How are you? I'm at the beach now. It's hot and sunny. I am sunbathing. My mum is swimming. My dad is buying ice cream. My sister is practising gymnastics on the hot sand. After her practice, she loves swimming and sunbathing. My brother is playing in the sand. After all the activities, we are going to eat ice cream.
The beach is beautiful. There is a lot of sand with shells.
At about half past nine we usually go to a restaurant for dinner.
Best wishes,
Violeta

We love it here!

Greetings from my hometown

Write an email to an English friend about your hometown. You might use the following plan:
  • Opening remarks (Hi! How's everything going?)
  • Location/Sights to see/Description
  • Entertainment
  • Closing remarks (Why don't you come and stay with me?)
Dear Lisa,
Hi! How is it in Leeds? You've asked me about Kikinda, so I'll write you a few things.
Kikinda is a small town in Serbia. It's in Vojvodina, in the north of Banat. It's very interesting that Kikinda is the biggest home of long-eared owls on the planet! Another amazing thing is that archaeologists found the skeleton of a mammoth in Toza Marković factory in 1996. People called it Kika and you can see it in the National Museum of Kikinda. You can also visit a dry mill, Suvača, one of two preserved in Europe. It's also pleasant to walk around Old Lake, the artificial lake in Kikinda.
Kikinda has got a theatre, a pool and lots of clubs. The people are helpful and friendly and they like the peace and quiet of Kikinda.
I hope you will come to Kikinda next year. Write me about your city!
Love,
Tijana

Tijana Varađanin, VII2

Dear Aleksandra,
Hi! How's everything going? Thanks for your email and the beautiful pictures of your place.
Kikinda is a lovely place in Serbia. There are many shops, boutiques, schools, cafes and clubs. Pumpkin Days is a local event held every year in October. People compete to see whose pumpkin is the largest and longest. The museum is also one of very interesting places for children and adults. Every year we celebrate Kika's birthday. Kika's skeleton was found in a tile factory called Toza Marković in 1996. We also have the National and the Children's Theatre called Lane. Every weekend we have a different performance.
The people are very friendly and helpful. Kikinda is a peaceful and quiet town, but I don't mind. I don't love heavy traffic.
There are a lot of things to do here. We often have birthdays and then go to a playground or cafe.
Kikinda is a very interesting place where you can see all sorts of things. I hope you'll like it.
Best wishes!
Write back soon!
Love,
Ivana

Dear Isabel,
Hi! How are you? Thanks for your email. Your town sounds wonderful. It is so interesting!
My place is a little town in Serbia called Kikinda. It isn't as big as Madrid and it isn't so modern, but it is still a beautiful place to live. There are a lot of things to do here. You can visit a museum, go jogging in Big park or play tennis on one of the courts.
Lots of people visit Kikinda because of the owls. My town has the most owls in the world!
Near the park, there is a little lake where you can walk your dog and breathe fresh air.
There are a lot of festivals, like the Pumpkin Days.
Kikinda isn't noisy. It is a really quiet town.
I hope you will come soon.
Love,
Anja

Anja Vučić, VII2

Dear Alexander,
Hello! How's everything going in Russia? Thanks for your e-mail and the lovely pictures of Peterhof and Hermitage.
Kikinda is a quiet place in a region called Vojvodina. There are a lot of lovely things here, like the Town Museum, Suvača or Terra.
In the Town Museum you can see animals, antiquities and clothes from the Banat culture. The building was constructed in 1839.
Suvača is a dry horse-powered mill where flour was made. The only two such mills that are left are the one in in Kikinda and one in Hungary.
There aren't many festivals here, except the Pumpkin Days.
You can go to local restaurants and eat delicious food.
Hey, why don't you come to Serbia for a few days or more?
Anyway, I'll finish now. Write back soon!
Love,
Marko

Marko Dejanović, VII4

Dear Milana,
Hi! How are you? Thanks for your e-mail! I really like the photos of your place.
Kikinda is a beautiful place in the north-east of Vojvodina. There are a lot of interesting sights to visit, such as the Old Pond, Town Park, Sports Centre, Terra Art Gallery or the Museum. The town centre is really beautiful. I love it! There are two beautiful old churches. There are also a lot of shops in the centre. I love going shopping!
The people I know are very friendly and helpful, so you can never get lost in Kikinda. That's what I really like about it. You can easily get around on your bicycle or in a car.
Kikinda is a quiet town. You can often hear birds singing. At night you can hear owls hooting. The owls that live on the town square are unique. Numerous tourists come to see them.
Of you get hungry, I will take you to a very good restaurant. It's called Bella Villa. the food is so delicious there!
Please, come to Kikinda! I will take you everywhere.
Write back soon!
Love,
Ema

Hi, Jane,
How are you? Thanks for your e-mail and the beautiful pictures of your place.
Kikinda is my birthplace. It is located in Vojvodina, actually in Banat. Kikinda is a small place, but very interesting.
There are a lot of landmarks to see here, such as the National Museum, where the bones of a mammoth called Kika are kept. The museum also organises numerous exhibitions, which attract a lot of people.
In addition to the museum, there is an old dry mill called Suvača, worth exploring. Many years ago Suvača was useful to people and now it is the famous landmark of my town.
The Pumpkin Days are held annually in Kikinda. During these days, Kikinda is beautiful. Even the people from our neighbouring states come then.
In the centre of my town there is a large Town Hall, churches and numerous  beautiful buildings that adorn the square.
The people are very friendly.
There are other things that I could say about my hometown, but it would be better to visit it in person.
Kiss, kiss,
Jelena

My Neighbourhood

Write an email to your English friend and describe your neighbourhood. Write about what it is like, what shops there are near your house, what the people are like, how you like it  and things like that. Don't forget to start your email with some opening remarks and  'Hi' or 'Dear' and end with  some closing remarks and 'Yours' or 'Love'.

Dear Mary,
I live in a very busy street in Kikinda. It's called Zmaj Jovina. The traffic's very heavy. There are a lot of buses and lorries. But, I love living here. Everything's near, the school, the centre...
We have a clothes shop, a car service, a building materials shop and a bakery.
My neighbours are very friendly. There are a few children of my age. We play together a lot. My first neighbour's a girl, named Mia, and she's a very good friend of mine.
What about your neighbourhood? Do you like it?
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Tina

Robertina Tornji, VI5

Dear Tina,
I hope you're fine. You asked me where I live. Well, I live in a very busy street in Kikinda. On the corner of my street there's a bakery. On the other side of the street there's a florist, a cafe, a fast food restaurant and a supermarket. A few houses away there's a car wash.
Where do you live? Write and tell me about your street,
Natalia

Natalia Sakal, VI5

Hi Jane,
I hope you're OK. I know that you're coming to Kikinda and I hope you'll like it.
I live in a bright orange house. Down the street there's a shop and two corners farther there's the firehouse.
The neighbours are curious and make a lot of noise. There are a lot of children in my street.
I can't wait for you to come.
Write back soon,
Tijana

Tijana Mesaroš, VI4

My neighbourhood is a very quiet place. There's a playground and two markets. There's also a green area with bushes where stray dogs always come. One of my neighbours has got chickens and a rooster. The rooster crows at six in the morning and wakes up the whole neighbourhood. It bothers me that some naughty boys have broken the carousel at the playground and burned almost the entire ground and now there's nowhere to sit.
All in all, my neighbours are honest and noble people always willing to help.

My hometown (emails)

Dear Jimmy,

I’ve got your e-mail. Thanks.

How’s it going? I haven’t seen you for 3 months. Hope everything’s alright.

So, how was your football tournament? Did you win an award?

As you already know, I live in Kikinda. It’s in north of Serbia, in Vojvodina. It’s not a big town, so everything’s close at hand. There are plenty of cultural sites and monuments in our town, like a theatre, cinema and others. The best attraction in the town is our mammoth, Kika.

You can find a lot of entertainment, too. If you’re a party person, you’ll like our clubs, cafés and discos. Or if you enjoy peace and quiet, you’ll like our Big park and Old lake, where you can go for a walk or relax.

I hope I’ve thrilled you and you can’t wait to see what else our town hides and how this beautiful place looks like. You need to know, you’re always welcome.

Best wishes,

Aleksa

Aleksa Konstantinov, VII2, December 2010

Dear Wanja,

Hi! How’s everything going? Thanks for your email and the lovely pictures of your place. Now it’s my turn to write you something about my hometown.

The name of my place is Kikinda. Kikinda is in the north of Northeastern Serbia. There are not many impressive sights to see here. We only have our theatre and the Kikinda museum. But, there is one thing we can be proud of. In 1996, a great archaeological discovery was made. The well preserved remnants of a half-a-million-year-old mammoth were discovered on the outer edge of the town area. We call her Kika.

I guess you think of Kikinda as a boring old town, but my friends and I can always find some fun things to do. Why don’t you come and stay with me for a few days, or even a week?

Write back soon!

Take care,

Filip

Filip Ivetić, VII3, December 2010

Dear Alex,

Hi! How’s everything going?

My hometown is Kikinda, and it is in Northern Banat, in Serbia. There are many sights to see, such as the Museum, Theatre and so on.

There are many shops and banks. We have a bank at every corner. In our museum is Kika, the mammoth, our biggest treasure. In the theatre, we have many beautiful shows. Our town has the oldest library on the Balkans. Every Friday pupils from the fifth to eighth classes from all schools have a party in disco ‘Paun’ which is in the hotel ‘Narvik.

I would like you to come to Kikinda, and I hope we will see soon.

Write back!

Take care,

Theodora

Teodora Plavšić, VII1, December 2010

Dear Daniel,

My hometown is Kikinda. I have been living here since I was born. And I think that it is beautiful.

We have a museum and inside it is a mammoth named Kika. There is an old lake. The people are nice and the water tastes like tea.

There are lots of fun and old things like the old mill. So, it’s my Kikinda. You won’t regret it if you visit it.

Lots of love,

Sintia

Sintija Gabor, VII5, December 2010

Dear Jack,

My hometown is Kikinda and I think that it is great sometimes, and here is why I think so.

There are lots of fun places like the pool, the Old Lake and the central park. There are lots of schools and mine is called ‘Sveti Sava’. There are two churches.
The bad thing is that there are a lot of banks and Chinese shops. Some people are mean and the water is brown. It is gross.

If you want to visit, bring some bottled water.

Your worst enemy,

Csaba
