Letters to Santa

 Dear Santa,
How are you? Do reindeer listen to you? Are you prepared for Christmas and New Year holidays, or this ugly situation with Corona will stop you?
I am very sad because our lives are not the same any more. We became like strangers and always in a bad mood. We stopped going to school also.
If you are coming, you must put a mask on your face.
I hope that next year everything will be like it used to be.
Love,
Vanja!!!

Problem Pages

As a warm-up, I asked my students a few questions (What kind of problems do teenagers face today? Why do these problems occur? What are the consequences? What helps you solve some of these problems?)
Then, I asked them to form four-member groups. Each group got a letter asking for advice. I explained the task (read the letter, identify the causes of the problem(s) and the consequences as well, using the problem tree technique, and suggest some advice) and checked their understanding.
Later, I monitored the group work and encouraged teamwork of students. I also shared some suggestions and provided assistance when needed.

Each group shared their work with the others, who gave their feedback.

In the next lesson, the same groups gathered around the new task - to write a letter of advice. But, first, I read an example of such a letter, and asked them some questions (How does the letter begin / end? In which part of the letter is compassion shown? In which part of the letter is the hope that the advice will help? In which part are the tips mentioned and the expected results stated?);
Again, I monitored the group work and helped them when needed.

Each group read their letters of advice and the others commented.

Meet Me

Dear friend,
Thanks for your letter. I'm fine, how are you?
First of all, let me tell you about myself. I am 14 years old. I live in Kikinda, Serbia.
I have green eyes. My hair is short and brown. My lips are thin.
I am above all honest. I am a good friend and very friendly person. I always help the others if I can. My friends think I am shy, just because I do not like being in the centre of attention. Sometimes I am impatient and stubborn. I do not change my mind easily. I believe that life is ahead of me and I have some time to change for the better.
There are four people in my family. My favourite person is my dad. We like spending time together.
I am a student of both Sveti Sava Primary School and Slobodan Malbaški Music school. I play the accordion and I love singing.
My school starts at 8 o'clock in the morning and at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. I come back home at 1.30 in the afternoon or 6.30 in the evening. I go to school by bike or on foot. I usually do my homework after school.
That is all about me.
Hear from you soon,
Nevena

Nevena Milovanov VIII3, 3 December 2015

Hello Steve,
My name is Igor. I'm 14 years old. I was born on 30 October, on Halloween, spooky, isn't it?
I live in a small town in Serbia. That town is Kikinda.
I go to Sveti Sava Primary School.
I have an older sister. When I was 3 years old, my sister was jealous, because I had a lot of toys. She stole them, so we fought a lot over them. But now, she misses me, because she is a student at the University of Novi Sad. I love her so much.
I'm a very positive and friendly person. I love dancing and singing.
As for the bad sides of my personality, I have a bad temper and fight with all my friends, neighbours and sometimes even teachers.
I have a lot of friends, but my best ones are Luka and Ivan. The people who mean a lot in my life are: my mum, dad, my sister Sanja, cousin Dejana and the most important person in my life is girlfriend Mia.
That's all about me.
Hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Igor

Dear Pedro,
Thanks for your letter. I hope we will get to be great friends.
First of all, I would like to tell you a few things about myself. I'm 14 years old and I live in Kikinda, Serbia. My mum is a housewife. She does her best to make the entire family comfortable. My dad is the money-maker. He rents sound equipment, works as an audio engineer and a musician. I also have a baby brother, Gabriel, who is 2 years old.
My favourite free time activity is surfing the web and reading music catalogues, among other things. I like all kinds of music and the only real criterion is whether it is good or not. I also play tennis and have lessons on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
What about you? What are your interests?
Please, write soon.
Yours,
Kristian

Letter Writing

As part of my Class 7 students' preparation for the HIPPO competition, I asked them to write a letter, following the instructions found online. I wanted to help them practise their writing skills more.

Imagine you have just come back from holiday. Write a letter to a friend telling him or her about your holiday.

You can write about...

  • What happened on the journey
  • Where you stayed on holiday
  • What you did on holiday
  • What you liked/disliked about your holiday

Dear Emily,
How are you? What have you been up to lately?
I am going to tell you all about my wonderful holiday in Los Angeles, California, USA. We went there by plane. We travelled for 12 hours! I cannot even tell you how sleepy I was! We went to visit my grandma, and I was so excited to see her, because I have not seen her in ages. When we got there, we unpacked our bags, ate some dinner and went to sleep.
The next morning, we got dressed and went to explore the town. We went to Disneyland! It was great! There were a lot of fun rides, and of course I met the princesses. We even went to watch The Lakers play! It was awesome! Going to California was the best holiday ever!
Hope to hear from you soon,
Love,
Kosana

Dear Michael,
How are you? Is John recovering from the fall?
I have just returned from my holiday, and it was so great up there in the mountains. It's much colder there than here in the flatlands, I saw many little creeks, and the water was so pure. We stayed in a small cottage with a small farm behind it. I tasted many food specialties, and they were gorgeous. But the best part of the whole holiday was when we went mountain climbing. You like mountain climbing, don't you?
I really recommend you go there on your next holiday. You won't regret it.
Write me soon,
Lazar

A Journey to Remember

Write a letter to your friend describing your journey. The following questions might help you:
Where were you?
Who was with you?
What was the weather like?
How long did your journey last?
How did you travel?
What did you see?
What were the best/worst things that happened?

Don't forget the opening and closing remarks!

Dear Jane,
I hope you're OK.
Last summer I was at the seaside in Greece. I went with my mum, dad and my brother. We travelled by bus. It took us thirteen hours to get there.
The days were sunny and warm.
The hotel was wonderful. It had a balcony overlooking the beach.
Every evening we walked round the city, visited the fortress and watched the sunset.
Our holiday lasted only a week, but it was the best one in my life.
What about your holiday?
Best wishes,
Tijana

Tijana Mesaroš, VI4

Hi, Jovan,
Hope you're OK. Guess where I spent my holiday! I went to Rome. It was amasing. I saw a lot of attractions.
The Colosseum is great. It is so big and beautiful. There were a lot of old buildings nearby. I saw Casear's photo and a lot of shops.
There were a lot of people and they were all very friendly.
Rome is a really exciting city. You must visit it one day.
Write back soon.
Yours,
Dušan

My Ideal Holiday (letters)

Imagine that you're on holiday at your favourite destination. Write a letter to your friend telling him/her what visitors can do there, what sights they can see, what you're doing, and things like that.

Dear Tom,
I'm writing you from Leptokaria, Greece. It' s a small city with not so many activities.
The weather's great. It's hot and sunny. We had rain only for one day.
I'm here with my brother, mother and my friends, Dušan, Milorad, Stefan and Andrej. We're all swimmers.
The hotel's good. We have the Internet, TV and our own kitchen. The food's excellent. Every day we eat gyros and ice cream. We play beach volleyball.
Two days ago we were in Aqua park in Salonica. It was one of the best days on this holiday. An aqua park' s a very good place to have fun. I like the speed and water. I've found all that in this park. Everything had been super until I got hurt. I hit the concrete!
I suggest Leptokaria for family people who like a peaceful place. The beach's sandy. The water's clear and hot. It's so perfect I never want to leave!
See you soon,
Your friend, Igor

Hi, Abby,
I've finally arrived in London! I can't believe it, my dream has come true!
My little hotel's so cosy and beautiful.
I'm sitting on the couch right now, drinking some tea and I can't be happier! It's a bit cloudy now, but the weather's just fine. I'm going on a tour with my group later, to take some pictures! I'll e-mail them tomorrow. I just can't wait to take pictures of their telephones and the Big Ben!
I've met a few people here and we're roommates now. Ivonne and Sam are with me. They're from Scotland and Wales. They're so funny and friendly!
I love the shops here. I'll bring you an amazing souvenir! Something you really want... Guess!
Tomorrow I'm going to the restaurant I've already ordered breakfast from. It couldn't have been more delicious! I've never tasted better eggs and bacon in my entire life! I can't wait to get there tomorrow! I'm going there for some lunch break after taking some pictures.
The sites can't be better! London's such a beautiful city! I would really like the two of us to visit it together next year. It would be so much fun!
I really love London, but I really miss you, Abby, and the others. Send them lots of hugs and kisses. I'll bring a souvenir for every single one of you!
XOXO,
Angela

Dear Sister,
I'm in Golubac. It's a beautiful and peaceful place, next to the big river of Danube.
We have great weather with a lot of sun, but it's not warm all the time. We have a lot of shade under the big poplar trees.
Our fishing trip's doing great! Until now, we've caught four big carps and two perches! Our fishing spot's perfect! We have the beautiful nature around us. We sleep in our tent and have all the necessary equipment.
Golubac is a very cute place on the map of Serbia with a lot of kind and good people, but the only thing I don't like is the rubbish all around us. I hope that some people will do something about it and make Golubac nicer than it is now!
Lots of love,
Joca

Dear Jelena,
I’m writing from Venice, Italy. The weather’s great. It’s sunny and a bit windy.
I’ve made new friends, Alexandra from Russia and Samantha from Canada.
Each place I visit in Venice is great. The other day I went with Alexandra on a boat trip. We saw the whole city on water. The following day, Samantha, Alexandra and I went to a restaurant. We tried a pizza called ‘The pineapple surprise’ and then pastas. The food was amazingly delicious.
One of the interesting things about Venice is that it’s the only city on water in the world.
I also like the souvenirs. I’ve never thought Venice could be so beautiful and lovely. I recommend it to everyone, especially you.
See you back home.
Love,
Mimma

Dear Jelena,
I’m writing to you from the big island of Hawaii. My friends and I came up with an idea to come here last week.
We arrived on Monday and we’re in the 5-star Europa hotel.
We’re amazed by the coast. It’s always summer here, as we’ve heard, with only few rainy days a year.
So far Mima, Jaca, Vlada, Jovana and I have played volleyball on the beach, been scuba diving and jet skiing. We’ve also visited the Museum in Honolulu and some volcanoes.
The other evening, we wee in a national restaurant and the dishes were tasty, but don’t ask me for their names, because I don’t remember them.
On the island, there are a lot of palm trees. The beaches are sandy and the water around the island is so clear.
I’m having an amazing holiday here. I’ve learnt many new things about Hawaii and I would advise you to go there as well.
I’m very happy to have my dream come true and I’ve had the chance to visit such an exciting place.
See you soon,
Denis Nastovski VIII2

Dear Tom,
How is it back there? I’m having so much fun here in France. The weather is amazing. It’s hot and sunny. I’m going to take pictures of Paris in about an hour. I can’t wait!
I’m here with Tanya and Sam. They’re so fine and funny. We met on the bus and we spend every moment together!
I love my little hotel. It’s so great. The food’s a bit expensive, but it’s delicious. I love the Eiffel Tower. My dream’s finally come true! The people are so kind…
I wish you were here with me. We would have so much fun together. Maybe next year?
Kisses,
Siniša

Meet me (letters & articles)

Write a short text about yourself. Describe your hobbies, your favourite school subjects, your best friend and family, and things like that.

Hi. I'm the only Chinese in our school. So, you want to meet me. It's so easy.
I'm thin and short. I have long black hair.
I come from a big family. I have father, mother, brother and grandmother. My father, mother and I are in this town. We moved here a few months ago. My brother is in China with my grandmother. I have a good family. I love them dearly.
I like playing computer games. Every day I watch movies. I like shopping, too. I think every girl wants to be pretty. Me too.
Back in China, I have a lot of friends. We went to school together. On Sunday we used to go shopping or to the park. We have always had a good time together these years. I will remember them all. In this town, I have friends too. They are very friendly. I think they like the Chinese very much. So, I'm very happy.

Teen problems (letters of advice)

Write a letter of advice to your friend on how to deal with the situation. You might follow this plan:
P1: express your sympathy, state the reason for writing
P2: write your advice and support it with possible results
P3: express hope that things will get better
The following  expressions might help you:
- to give advice: If I were you, I'd..., You should(n't)..., It would be a good idea if..., The best thing to do is..., Why don't you...?, Have you thought of...?
- to give support/result: This will mean that..., Then,..., This/That way..., If you do this, you will... .

Dear Lindsey,
After reading your letter I realized that you have the same problems as the other teens. Every teen has problems with social and love life. Don't worry! There's always a cure.
If I were you, I would join some school clubs. This way, you'll meet new friends and build your self - confidence.
Another good idea is to invite your new friends for a sleepover. There, you will talk about everyone and everything.
You should also visit some cafes, or go out more often. If you do like this, you'll have new friends in no time.
Put a smile on that sad face and hope for the best.
Yours,
Mimma

Milica Marić, VIII2, November 2011

Dear John,
I'm sorry to hear other people are making fun of your hairstyle. You shouldn't worry because lots of teens have similar problems. I'll give you some advice. This will make yourself feel better, I hope.
First of all, you should find people who like you the way you are. This will make you forget about your hairstyle and they could also help you fix this problem. You can also change your hairstyle if you don't like it. This way you will gain more self-confidence and it would be much easier to find new friends.
I hope these few pieces of advice will help you. Let me know how it goes.
Yours,
Aleksa

A Letter to My Friend

Dear Slavko,
How are you? How’s it going? I hope everything’s OK with you.
Guess what! I went on a school trip on Friday. We went to a nature reserve called Emperor’s Swamp. It was great. We were on a boat, too.
The boat trip was thirty minutes long. We saw many animals: turtles, snakes, birds and others. Our guide was happy to tell us about all the things in Emperor’s Swamp.
We asked our teacher if we could take a walk through the forest. She told us we could. We were very happy.
The forest was beautiful. We took many pictures of it. When we got back from the walk, it was time to go.
From there, we went to Rusanda Spa. There were a lot of benches in the park. We had a rest there. Later, we spent some time checking out the place. We played a game of chess too. Then we went home.
What about you? Have you been anywhere lately?
That’s all for now.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Boris

Dear Stephanie,
How are you? How are things? Hope everything’s OK.
Guess what! I went with my friends to Old lake on Friday. It was incredible! We were sitting on the bench, looking at the water and chatting, when suddenly a good-looking boy looked at my friend. While he was looking at her, he wasn’t paying attention wher he was going and what he was doing, so he fell into the lake! Everybody started laughing at him, especially we! It was a really funny day... How did you spend your weekend?
This week I’m going on a trip with my class. We’re going to the Danube Gorge and I hope that it’ll be great.
Have you got any plans for the summer? I still don’t know where to go for the summer... Probably with my parents... Maybe to the seaside...
Well, that’s all for now. Hope to hear from you soon.
Your friend,
Ivana

Dear Johanna,
How are you? How are things? Hope everything’s OK with you.
Guess what! I went on a school trip on Friday. We visited a nature reserve called Emperor’s Swamp. We took a boat ride, which lasted about two hours, and then we saw some lizards and spiders. It was great! I was in the wood with my friends and we explored it, but when we saw a snake, we went back! It was so funny when we ran back!
By the way, I’m going to spend my summer holidays at home, at my cousin’s who lives in Novi Sad and on some mountains with mountaineers. I like summer holidays because we don’t go to school and it is warm and sunny so we can go to the swimming pool.
How did you spend your weekend? What are your plans for the summer?
Well, that’s all for now. Hope to hear from you soon.
Your friend,
Aleksandra

Dear Jasmine,
How are you? What’s new? Hope everything’s OK with you.
I have some new things to tell you. Guess what! I went on a trip on Sunday. It was great! I went to Novi Sad with my parents. We often go to this town because I have some cousins there. My parents and I love to pay them a visit.
I really like Novi Sad. It is a beautiful town. I love everything about it and I love the people who live there. They are so generous, funny and kind.
In this town I really like the Petrovaradin fortress. This is the most beautiful fortress in Vojvodina.
I would like to spend my summer holiday in my favourite town. That would be lovely!
And how did you spend your week? Do you like trips and what is your favourite destination? Where are you going to spend your summer holiday?
Well, that’s all for now. I really hope to hear from you soon.
Your friend,
Andrea

Dear Sanja,
How are you? Is there something new? I hope everything is OK.
Guess what! On Friday I went on a one-day school trip to Carska Bara (Emperor’s Swamp). Emperor’s Swamp is a natural reserve, which is only forty-five minutes ride from Kikinda. As soon as we arrived, we got on a small boat. We rode about forty-five minutes through the swamp. Then we stopped and watched some birds. A man told us some interesting things about Emperor’s Swamp. Later, we ate our sandwiches and went for a walk through the woods. I really liked Emperor’s Swamp.
About one hour later, we went to Rusanda Spa. We had some time to relax there and then we rode back to Kikinda.
In a few days I’m going on another school trip, to Djerdap – the Danube Gorge. By the way, have you seen or done something interesting lately?
I can’t wait for the summer holiday to start! On 25 June I’m going to Spain with my mum. What are you planning for your summer holiday?
With love,
Dunja

Dear Kelly,
How are you? Hope everything’s OK with you.
Unfortunately, I have a problem. My marks at school aren’t so good. I’m not very satisfied. My mother’s a teacher and she always says that I must study more. The only problem’s that I don’t love studying much. It’s often boring. However, history classes are interesting for me. Reading the history book’s always interesting, because I can see a lot of history programmes on television, too, and I can understand everything better. Films sometimes show some historic events and I can understand better when I read something for the class.
On the other hand, subjects like maths or physics are difficult, because I sometimes don’t understand things. One day, when they make an interesting programme about maths, I’ll like it, I hope.
By the way, my parents are making plans for the summer holiday. We’ll probably go to the seaside. I’m very happy because of that. I like swimming and sitting in the sun. When we go to Greece, I’ll be able to practise my English. It’s always exciting. There are many people from foreign countries and we talk to them and play with them. Maybe we’ll write letters later. What are your plans for the summer?
I must do my English homework now. I hope I’ll see you soon.
Best wishes,
Grigorije

Dear Suzie,
How are you? How are things?
Guess what! I went on a school trip on Friday. We visited the nature reserve Emperor’s Swamp. It was great! We took a boat ride on a small boat through the Swamp. We saw a lot of birds which are very rare. We had a lot of fun. What about you? Were you on a school trip too? Was it interesting?
Next week, on Friday again, I’m going on another school trip. We are visiting the Danube Gorge. We are staying there for two days. I hope we will see a lot of interesting things, and that it will be great. What about you? How are you going to spend your next weekend?
By the way, what are your plans for the summer? Are you going somewhere? I am going to stay at home, read a book, go swimming, or something like that.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Smiljana

Dear Jana,
How are you? What's happened in Kikinda for the last two weeks? Is there anything new or interesting?
I'm at the seaside and I'm having a great time! The weather's wonderful so I'm sunbathing the whole day. I also swim a lot and play volleyball.
Guess what happened a few days ago? While I was diving near the shore, I found a golden necklace stuck between some rocks. My mum was very happy about it. She liked it very much.
The only bad thing about this holiday is the food. Since we're at the seaside, the main food is fish. And, as far as you know, I'm not very fond of fish. But, luckily, the ice cream's excellent and it's not very expensive.
I'm enjoying it here, but I miss my friends.
I hope to meet you soon, but until then, you can write to me.
See you soon,
Viktor
