Amazing Creatures

Talking about animals is always fun for my pupils. Each year, I try to introduce fresh activities to keep them engaged and help them learn and use new words.

As a warm-up, I asked the pupils to look at the poster on the board and guess which animal I was describing. We recalled our last year's lessons, where they worked in groups to create animal habitats. We mentioned where different animals live and what they eat.

Next, two volunteers read a short text from our book about turtles. We discussed their size, colour, habitat, and what makes them special.

Then, I drew a large mind map on the board and asked the pupils to do the same in their notebooks. We brainstormed what to include in their writing, and agreed on: name, size, colour, habitat, food, abilities, and fun fact. To support weaker pupils, I wrote sentence starters as well: My favourite wild animal is ... . It lives in ... . It can ... . One interesting fact about it is ... . The pupils used the information from their mind maps to write a short paragraph about their favourite wild animal.

To wrap-up, a few volunteers read their paragraphs and received feedback.

In the next lesson, pupils designed infographics showcasing their favourite wild animals, using the information from their mind maps.

My Favourite Painting

Do you like going to art galleries or museums? Who is your favorite artist? What are your favorite paintings?

Write an article about your favourite painting for an international magazine.

Organise your work in three paragraphs:

Paragraph 1: What is your favourite painting? When did you first see it? Where? Who painted it? Which art movement does the artist belong to? (impressionism, surrealism, cubism, etc.) When was it created?
Paragraph 2: What type of painting is it? (portrait, self-portrait, landscape, cityscape, still life) What techniques are used? (oil on canvas, watercolour, ink,...) What does the painting show? Describe the atmosphere. What colours and shapes are there?
Paragraph 3: Why do you like the painting? How does it make you feel?

My favourite painting is Migration of the Serbs. It was painted by Paja Jovanović, one of the greatest Serbian painters.
On the painting, you can see poor Serbs moving from the south of Serbia to Belgrade and Vojvodina. You can also see the leader with a broken arm, and Archbishop Arsenije III Čarnojević. The people in the painting are poor, travelling on horses or on foot. They bring with them food, clothing and some of their animals. The painting makes me feel sad for the people.
The strongest colour on the painting is orange, but there are other darker colours, too.
This is my favourite painting because it shows the history of my country and a lot of emotions.

Mihajlo Jovanović, VIII1

Something that always reminds me of my childhood is one old painting at my grandma's house.
My special painting does not have a name and we do not know who painted it. It hangs high on a wall in the living room, so when I was little, I would always step up on a chair and stare at it.
On the painting, we can see a river, trees, nature and one yellow house in the middle of nowhere. Everything is a little blurry, so we cannot tell what is exactly on the painting, but I think I saw one dog near the house. The painting represents one windy autumn day. The main colors are yellow, red, orange, blue and green.
I do not know what is so special about that painting, but it left me a core memory. Even nowadays, whenever I visit my grandma, I always have to look at that magic painting. Even though I do not know the name of the painting or who painted it, it will always be my deer mystery. As long as I am here, I will never forget my special painting.

Mia Pavlov, VIII2

My favourite painting is Woman with a Hat. I saw it at an exhibition in an artist's house a few years ago.
It was painted by Henri Matisse in 1905. It is an oil on canvas painting. The painting shows Henri's wife Amelie Matisse. Various colors are mixed which makes the painting more impressive.
I like this painting because the artist painted, and thus showed everyone, the love of his life. When I see that painting, I feel very calm. Henri Matisse is one of my favourite artists because he shows other people how beautiful something is, with shades of delicate colors.

All About...

How many real friends have you got? What makes a good friend? Who is your best friend? Write about him/her in 80-100 words.
Organise your writing into 4 paragraphs:
Paragraph 1: What is your friend's name? Has he/she got a nickname? How and when did you two meet?
Paragraph 2: What does your friend look like? How old is he/she? How tall is he/she? What can you say about his/her weight, hair, eyes?
Paragraph 3: What is your friend like? Don't just list the good and bad sides! Use the examples!
Paragraph 4: Why is your friend special to you? What do you enjoy doing together?

My best friend's name is Kalina. We met when we were three.
She is twelve. She is 147 cm tall and thin. She has got straight, dark brown hair and big brown eyes.
She is good, generous and always ready to help someone in trouble.
When we were nine, we went rollerskating together. I got my wheel stuck in a hole and I couldn't get it out, so she helped me.
She can also be stubborn sometimes, but I don't mind.
She is special to me because I can tell her my secrets and I know that she will keep them safe.
We love doing things together, but our favourite thing is building Legos.
Because of school we can't hang out as much as we used to, but we try spending our free time together.

Lara Avramov, VI2

Every person should have a best friend. We all sometimes need a hug, a talk to cheer up, help with something and a person that we can trust with our secrets and problems. My best friends are Bojana, Iva, Mia and Staša. I have known them since I was six, since the first day of school.
Mia and Staša have mid-length, brown hair, but Staša's hair is straight while Mia's is wavy . Staša has blue-greenish eyes and Mia has dark brown eyes. Bojana and Iva have long, straight hair but Bojana's is lighter than Iva's. Bojana has green eyes and Iva has brown eyes. They are of medium height. We are all eleven or twelve.
‌They are very polite, energetic and honest. Iva is the most honest. She always tells the truth. Bojana is the most creative, Mia is the most energetic and Staša is the most confident.
You probably think that the main reason why they're my best friends is that they're funny, but as much as it is true, there are many more reasons why I love them. I am the type of a person who always searches for the beautiful essence of simple things like a hug or a smile as a way of greeting or just sharing our school lunches.

Jovana Karić, VI2

Vukašin is funny. He tells funny things. He's also smart. He plays the guitar but he's often bossy because he wants everybody to play by his terms.
He is special to me because I've known him all my life and I hope that we will be best friends in the future.

He is large, tall, has short black hair and brown eyes. He is 12 years old and plays basketball. He has two brothers.
Tadija is in a good mood and cheerful all the time, with a smile on his face - we always have something to talk about and we are never bored. I appreciate that he is always with me. When I'm sick he calls me to see how I'm doing and sends me homework. When my bike broke down after training, he walked home with me in the rain.
On weekends we hang out, play games, watch movies. We don't have time during the week because of learning and basketball training.

Ognjen Orašanin, VI2

My best friend's name is Iva. Her nickname is Ivka. I call her like that. We met in the first grade. We started hanging out and being best friends then.
Iva has straight dark brown hair. Her eyes are green. She is of medium height, and she is 149 cm tall. She is slim, and she is twelve years old.
Ivka's favourite colours are green, purple and blue. She has a dog. His name is Gary. We love going rollerskating together. We go to school together, we walk with Gary and do so many more things.

Nebojša Stanaćev, VI3

We all have a best friend or someone close. My best friend is Jovana.

However, she is sometimes very loud and annoying when she isn't in the center of attention.
We are both very adventurous, so every time I visit her family, she and her brother would take me to the woods for the adventure I never forget. It's so much fun!

A Childhood Memory

One of my most interesting childhood memories is when I was on Zlatar Lake and Zlatar Mountain.
I went on a trip to Zlatar with my family. The trip was long but totally worth it. My family and I slept in a small mountain house with a beautiful view on the lake. Our hosts Milojko and Jelka were really good. We tasted a lot of things we had never even heard of before.
I will remember our hosts and all the food we tried, but I'll never forget the long walk in the woods. The walk itself wasn't much fun and interesting. After some time, I got very tired and decided to take a break, but I didn't let my parents and my sister know that I stopped walking. Shortly, they just disappeared and I got lost. I roamed the woods for about 23 minutes, trying to find the road back to the mountain house, but I had no luck. After roaming for some time, I saw Milojko and Jelka's grandson Sava. I yelled his name so he could notice me and help me find my family. This time I was lucky because he helped me find the road back to the mountain house.
When I came back to the house, my parents were pale and very scared. When they saw me, their face colour came back to normal, they jumped to hug me and they started crying.
I will never forget this and neither will my parents. Everything came out alright. I hope I won't get lost again. Next time when we're walking, I'll let my parents know that I stopped to have a break.

Lazar Turudija, VIII1, 7 April 2016

My childhood has been pretty awesome. I remember both good and bad times with a big smile on my face.
I have done a lot of stupid things with my cousin Nikola, but they are precious memories from my childhood.
Once, my cousin and I were bored, so we decided to go and play in the yard. I had an old washing machine that appeared to be very interesting to us. We put some bricks behind that washing machine so that bricks could be our seats like in a car, because we were playing the taxi driver game. We also put the bricks from the yard in the drum of the washing machine so they could make noise like a car engine. When we finished playing the game, Nikola had to go home.
At dusk, my grandmother went to the yard to feed the ducks, but she couldn't find them, so she asked me and I said, 'I have no idea. Ask Nikola. He was playing with them.' So, when she called Nikola, he said the same thing about me. She was so angry! She went to the yard again and saw a little duck with difficulty walking. She got even angrier when she saw all our ducks in the washing machine.
That was the first time when my grandmother was angry with me. I was so sad back then.
That is just one sweet memory from my childhood and I will always remember it.

Dušan Bačkuljin, VIII1

We have a lot of memories. They can be good or bad, but the memories from our childhood are the best and we always remember them.
I was seven years old when I got my first bike. My dad and grandma told me I had to learn to ride a bike. That was boring to me because I liked swimming better.
It was hard to learn. My dad pushed me many times, but when he finally let me ride alone, I fell. My legs were full of injuries. I tried to ride many times, but were not able to. They knew how much I liked swimming, so dad told me that I should not go to the pool until I learned to ride my bike. I was very sad about that, and I learned to ride very fast.
Riding a bike wasn't as exciting for me as swimming at that time. After all, I went to the pool with my dad to celebrate this new experience.
Sadly, I haven't got my first bike now. I am really happy I learned to ride my bike. Now, when I am fifteen years old, I don't like swimming and I ride my bike wherever I go. One day without a bike is a bad day for me.

Luka Važić, VIII2

Our past is very important, because every event that happens in our lives makes us who we are today.
I remember one day, while I was in Bosnia, my cousin, several other kids from the street and I went on an 'adventure' in the nearby woods. Firstly, we had to cross a very muddy path, where a stream once ran. We spent the next twenty minutes after the crossing cleaning our shoes. After that, we saw a pack of feral dogs in the distance, so we left quickly in another direction. After a nice, long walk, we started, one by one, to get really hungry.
After a rather long journey home, we could smell fresh kebabs being served on the table.

Kristian Balaž, VIII2

Yesterday, while I was cleaning the attic, I found an old photo of me holding a little kitten. The moment I saw it, I remembered that day.
It was a nice sunny day. I just came come from school when I heard a strange sound. I went outside to see what was making that noise when I found a small box and a little kitten inside it. The kitty was a gift from my parents. It was so cute with its pink nose and big green eyes that I couldn't resist, so I just took him into my arms. I decided to call him Freckle.
Now he is five years old and he is no longer so cute and little, but I still love him the same.

Anja Vučić, VIII2

Two years ago, I spent my spring holiday with my aunt. We were visiting Vienna.
Vienna is one of the most famous cities in the world. Vienna was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but now it is the capital of Austria.
We arrived at the city at six and moved to the hotel at eight. People there are friendly and always on time. They speak German with each other, but English with the tourists.
First, we visited the Hofburg twins. In Hofburg, there is an art and history museum. I was amazed by the mummies, guns, art pieces and sculptures made of marble and silver.
Then, we visited Belvedere Castle which was the home of the famous Austrian general Prince Eugen of Savoy. There, I saw a famous painting of Napoleon crossing the Alps.
We also visited Schönbrunn Palace which is the largest of the three and famous for its size, garden and zoo.
Finally, we visited the Albertina Art Museum. There, I was fascinated by the masterpieces of Van Gogh, Picasso, Rubens, Rembrandt and Klimt.
On the last day, we visited the Imperial Treasury and tomb. There, I saw the graves of the Habsburg kings and queens and the jewellery and the clothes they wore.
This is my favourite childhood memory because I had a chance to experience all these wonderful things.

Meet Me

Dear friend,
Thanks for your letter. I'm fine, how are you?
First of all, let me tell you about myself. I am 14 years old. I live in Kikinda, Serbia.
I have green eyes. My hair is short and brown. My lips are thin.
I am above all honest. I am a good friend and very friendly person. I always help the others if I can. My friends think I am shy, just because I do not like being in the centre of attention. Sometimes I am impatient and stubborn. I do not change my mind easily. I believe that life is ahead of me and I have some time to change for the better.
There are four people in my family. My favourite person is my dad. We like spending time together.
I am a student of both Sveti Sava Primary School and Slobodan Malbaški Music school. I play the accordion and I love singing.
My school starts at 8 o'clock in the morning and at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. I come back home at 1.30 in the afternoon or 6.30 in the evening. I go to school by bike or on foot. I usually do my homework after school.
That is all about me.
Hear from you soon,
Nevena

Nevena Milovanov VIII3, 3 December 2015

Hello Steve,
My name is Igor. I'm 14 years old. I was born on 30 October, on Halloween, spooky, isn't it?
I live in a small town in Serbia. That town is Kikinda.
I go to Sveti Sava Primary School.
I have an older sister. When I was 3 years old, my sister was jealous, because I had a lot of toys. She stole them, so we fought a lot over them. But now, she misses me, because she is a student at the University of Novi Sad. I love her so much.
I'm a very positive and friendly person. I love dancing and singing.
As for the bad sides of my personality, I have a bad temper and fight with all my friends, neighbours and sometimes even teachers.
I have a lot of friends, but my best ones are Luka and Ivan. The people who mean a lot in my life are: my mum, dad, my sister Sanja, cousin Dejana and the most important person in my life is girlfriend Mia.
That's all about me.
Hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Igor

Igor Zagorac VIII1, 3 December 2015

Dear Pedro,
Thanks for your letter. I hope we will get to be great friends.
First of all, I would like to tell you a few things about myself. I'm 14 years old and I live in Kikinda, Serbia. My mum is a housewife. She does her best to make the entire family comfortable. My dad is the money-maker. He rents sound equipment, works as an audio engineer and a musician. I also have a baby brother, Gabriel, who is 2 years old.
My favourite free time activity is surfing the web and reading music catalogues, among other things. I like all kinds of music and the only real criterion is whether it is good or not. I also play tennis and have lessons on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
What about you? What are your interests?
Please, write soon.
Yours,
Kristian

Best friends (articles)

Everyone has a person or two they admire, that special person who shows a great example of doing something others say it couldn’t be done. The person I admire most is my BFF Jelena.

We met at a summer camp two years ago. Although we have known each other for just a while, it feels like we have known each other since kindergarten at least.

Jelena is tall, skinny and has wavy blond hair.

She is there for you 24-7 and never even breaks a smile. For example, whenever I ask her for a favour, she always puts her hand on my shoulder and says, ‘You don’t even have to ask, just tell me and I’ll do it.’

Jelena is a very good athlete. She’s good at basketball, swimming and volleyball. She has two silver and one bronze medals and several diplomas.
The reason why Jelena is the person I admire most is because she’s a good athlete, there for you and on top of everything an awesome friend to have.

Milica Marić, VIII2, May 2012

The name of my best friend is Tamara. We met each other on vacation. She lives in Belgrade.

She has short, curly brown hair and brown eyes. Tamara is very tall and slim. She has thin lips, too.

Tamara loves English and Maths. She is very smart and takes part in different competitions. She goes in for volleyball and handball.

Tamara is very intelligent and funny. She is also well organised. She can do all the stuff for school and still has enough free time.

Tamara is very stubborn and can sometimes be very annoying. But, she is a good listener and always gives me some advice. I love her. She is my best friend!

My Hero (descriptive essays)

Who is the hero in your life? What's his/her name? What does he/she look like? What's he/she like? Why do you admire this person? Describe your hero in an article.

My hero is my best classmate, Igor Pavlić. We first met on the 1st of September 2004. It was the first day of elementary school.

Igor is a handsome fourteen-year-old teen. He has been taking swimming lessons for eight years and that is why he has got big muscles. Igor weighs seventy-five kilos and he is one hundred and eighty centimetres tall. He has got brown hair and blue eyes.

He is a very social, brave, hardworking boy with a very big heart. When you ask him for help, he will do that with pleasure. Sometimes, when people make him mad, he becomes very rude, even if you are innocent. That is his flaw.

Igor is very popular in swimming. He has won so many medals that he might build a golden house.

Igor is my hero because he is smart, clever and has got bigger muscles than me. Another important reason why I have chosen Igor is trust.

Filip Smiljanić, VIII2

My hero’s name is Stan Lee. He makes a living by writing and drawing comic books. His most famous comics are: Spiderman, Iron Man, The X Men…

I heard about him when I was 6 years old. I was watching the movie ‘Spiderman’ and at the end of the credits I saw an interesting sentence: ‘Based on the original idea by Stan Lee.’

As I grew older, I started seeing him more like my role model, not just the guy who writes comics for people’s amusement.

Nowadays, Stan is old. He has grey hair, green eyes and for some reason he always wears sunglasses.

He has lots of personal qualities that he reflects in his comics. For example, he thinks that superheroes should not be perfect and indestructible. His creations are made like normal persons who cares bout the other persons and are not selfish.

I do not know much about his hobbies. I just know that he likes to draw and to write stories.

These days, Stan Lee is one of the most famous people in the world, because his comics were made into hit films, and he has a TV series called ‘Stan Lee’s Superhumans’ where he shows that there are superheroes in our everyday life.

I feel that Stan is a hero to a lot of people in the world and he will remain a hero long after he’s gone.

Csaba Kurunci, VIII5

All of us have a special person in our lives. For me, it is my mother.

According to me, she is the most beautiful person in the world. She has always a smile on her face and she never gets angry. She is always in a good mood and she is always there for me.

My mum is honest, reliable, patient, friendly, sociable, helpful and optimistic. She helps everybody who asks her for any kind of help. That is why all my relatives and neighbours love and respect her.

All her life she has been a mother, wife and housewife and has dedicated her life to us. My success is her biggest achievement.

I am thankful to her because she gave me the birth and I can say she is the best mum in the world.

Friends (essays)

Almost everyone has got many friends, but just few friends are the best. They help you in trouble, laugh with you and spend time with you.
I’ve got three best friends. They are Ivana, Dijana and Smiljana. This time I’ll describe Ivana.
Ivana is a tall, fourteen-year-old girl, who lives in Kikinda and is in the same class with me. She has got straight, brown hair and brown eyes. When she reads, she wears glasses. She is a pretty, friendly and gorgeous girl who has a younger sister. In her free time, Ivana likes listening to music (pop, rock and r’n’b), going rollerblading, sleeping or hanging out with her best friends. She also likes going shopping or to a café with us.
Ivana’s favourite colours are red and black, and she would like to have a tattoo. When she grows up she wants to be a psychologist or a translator.
Ivana is very direct and sincere. She likes helping people – when I need some help, she is there for me. She is very friendly and likes making new friend. But she is very stubborn and panicky. When she has a test, especially Maths test, she gets into a panic, a lot, and then she makes a lot of stupid mistakes.Ivana likes sport, too. She used to play volleyball and tennis, and do karate, but not anymore.
Ivana is my best friend, because she is great, loves having a lot of fun and laughing and she always tells me what she thinks. It is beautiful to have a friend like her, because she is always there when I need her.
Everyone should have friends like Dijana, Ivana and Smiljana, because they are really the best friends for life.

Aleksandra Kantar, May 2009

I have got many friends. I have met them in many different places: at school, on volleyball trainings, in music school, in my neighbourhood. They are all very important to me, and I am sad because I do not have enough time to be with them as much as I would like to. Although I often say that they are all my best friends, I actually have just one best friend. Her name is Ivana.
We have known each other since we were babies. Now we go to the same school and class – we even sit at the same desk. People often say that somebody must have the same interests as you to be your best friend. I think that is not true. Ivana and I are very different – that is the secret of our ‘long lasting’ friendship.
Ivana is my best friend, but I do not go everywhere with her. I have a friend for everything – for talking about serious things, for talking about boys, for parties…
Unfortunately, I do not have any male friends. All my friends are girlfriends. It is mostly like that with the girls of my age. I hope that it will not be like that when I grow older.
Although my friends are the same age as me, I like being with younger girls, too. They always ‘fresh me up’ with their stories and their own problems. It is because I sometimes want to get away from my friends and from the stories that have already been told for a hundred times. I like listening about the people I do not know very well. It sometimes makes me change my opinion about them and it makes me ask myself if they are really like the others show them.
I like meeting new people. It is interesting, exciting and challenging. That is why I am looking forward to attending new school the next school year.

Dunja Ilić, May 2009

I have got four best friends. Aleksandra, Dijana, Smiljana and Jelena are the people I most like to spend time with. I am going to describe Aleksandra.
Aleksandra is tall, with long, brown hair and brown eyes. She is very thin. Aleksandra cannot eat sweets or anything which contains sugar, because she is a diabetic. I am very sorry for her.
Aleksandra is always there for me when I ask for her help. She is very generous, nice and polite. I owe her a lot, honestly. She is also very friendly. She likes going out and hanging out with us. Her flaw is that she is very nervous. She easily gets mad, and at some stupid things. When we have exams she is always scared that she has not learned the lesson very well, but she knows that she has.
In her free time, Aleksandra likes reading books, rollerblading and listening to music. Her favourite types of music are r ’n’ b and pop, and her favourite singers are Rihanna, Britney Spears and Enrique Iglesias.
Aleksandra likes going shopping. I can freely say that she is a shopping-maniac. When we go shopping, she buys almost everything she can.
She also likes watching sports, like volleyball and tennis. Two years ago she played volleyball, but not any more.
It is very important to have friends, because they will always be there for you, and I know that Aleksandra, Dijana, Smiljana and Jelena will always be there when I need them.

Ivana Grubišić, May 2009

I have many friends, but many girlfriends. I have some friends at school, in my street, on the volleyball team... My best friends are Dunja Ilić, Milica Bozitovac and Ivana Vuletić. I spend my free time with them.
Ivana is fourteen years old and she was born in December. She is of medium height, with short, straight, brown hair.
She has a very pretty smile. She is also very moody, intelligent and interesting.
Ivana has been playing the piano for five years. She is good at school, too. I go to school with her and visit her nearly every day.
Dunja has short, black hair and black eyes. She is of medium height and very pretty.
She plays volleyball and the piano. She is very good at school, especially Serbian and English.
She is a very good sportsperson, too. We play on the same volleyball team.
Dunja is a very good friend who always helps me.
Milica is fifteen years old. She was born in May. She has long, black hair and black eyes. She is as tall as Dunja.
Milica is a great girl! Her favourite colours are orange, yellow and green. She likes being a good-looking girl. She is very good at English, too. She often goes rollerblading with me. She is very cute and caring.
I like my best friends very much, because they are kind and always help me.

Katarina Marojkin, May 2009

Real friends are people who are there when you need them. I have three such friends: Dijana, Aleksandra and Ivana. But, my best friend is Dijana.
She is short, with brown eyes. Her hair is long and brown. She cares a lot about her hair. She does not like it when somebody touches it. If that happens she gets nervous and starts yelling.
Dijana is willing to help me whenever I need her help. But she often gets nervous (because I cannot understand her).
She is a very friendly person. She likes to hang out and meet new friends. When I am ill, she always brings me the homework and explains me the things I do not understand.
She loves animals and she has two cats called Caca and Tasha at home. She cares a lot about them.
When she grows up she wants to be a vet. Once, when she found an injured cat, she took her home and gave her food and something to drink.
Dijana’s biggest fear is a high place. When we were at our friend Tanja’s apartment, Dijana was looking down at the street from the balcony, her leg slipped and she almost fell, but I caught her, just in time. Since then she has been afraid of heights.
We have a lot of things in common: we both love animals, we share the same fear, we listen to the same kind of music, and so on.
Dijana is simply my best friend, dear, interesting, funny...
She is an example of a good friend. I do not know what I would do without her.
It is beautiful to have friends.

My Favourite Person (essays)

Write an article about a person you admire.
  • Who is it?  How do you know this person?
  • What does this person do?
  • What does he/she look like?
  • What is that person like?
  • Why do you admire him/her?
Hmmm... I admire Bob Marley, Superman, Spiderman, Nikola Tesla, but the person I admire most is my mother.

Her name is Mara. She is a forty-two-year old, short, and a little bit fat woman. Her eyes are brown. Her hair was once brown, too, but now it is black. She dyes her hair because it has become grey. Why? She is getting older, and we, my brother and me, aren’t very good sons. We have cost her wrinkles on her forehead and a lot of tears and bad yellow minutes. After all, she says that we are good sons and I love that. I love the moment when she tells me that she is proud of me, and that she loves me. She has said that more and more rarely to me, because I have become bad. ’What can I do? You’re in the process of growing,’ she says. Huh, yes...

And, then, the fight... After a few hours we meet half-way and make peace.

My mother is very caring and good. She always says that I must be better at everything, like school, sport and my behaviour. She also says that I must be honest and brave, and things like that. Those are in fact her best qualities.

I love my mother because she is always there for me, to help and to teach. She is the person I admire most.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (reading activities)

This is a story about two different sisters. The older one is called Elinor and she represents sense, and the younger one is called Marianne, who represents sensibility.

Elinor is sensible, calm, clever and she hardly ever expresses her feelings. When Elinor finds out that Edward Ferrars, her secret true love, is engaged with another woman, she keeps her pain for herself. Behind her coldness, there is hidden sensibility and a big heart, which belongs to Edward.

Elinor is a generous person, too. She is nice, polite and everybody loves her. Elinor is the smartest in the family. She advises her mother and sisters to make some decisions. She takes care of them and we can see that when Marianne gets ill.

On the other hand, Marianne is sensitive, full of passionate and romantic feelings. She likes having fun and partying all night long. She cannot understand how Elinor can be so cold and not express her feelings.

Marianne believes that true love can only be felt by the young. When she meets Mr Willoughby, who is romantic and passionate just like her, she falls in love with him. The time that she spends with him is the most pleasant and romantic time she has ever had. When Mr Willoughby comes to Marianne to say goodbye to her, because he has to leave the town and Devonshire, Marianne reacts passionately and refuses to talk to him. Here we can see that she is different from Elinor who would probably stay calm at this.

There is also Colonel Brandon, a middle-aged man, who likes Marianne. Is he going to conquer Marianne’s heart?

I liked the book very much. The characters are very interesting and complicated people.

Pets (essays)

I love animals, especially cats. I have three cats, but I am going to write about the youngest and smartest of them, named Pićuka.
When I was coming home from school one day, I saw a small cat in trouble. It was being chased by a dog. I quickly grabbed it and saved it. It was so frightened.
At home, my family and I agreed to call it Pićuka, because it is funny. Pićuka is a male. He has large, green eyes and a small head. His fur is black and white.
Remember when I said that he was the smartest cat? I am going to explain you why I think so. He jumps on a handle and opens the door, so, thanks to him, all the cats get in. Whenever he is thirsty, he goes to the bathroom and when we hear, ’Miaow, miaow,’ we know that we have to give him water.
Sometimes, he is not so smart. When my grandmother is in the kitchen he goes round her legs... Many times I have seen Pićuka fly. My grandmother helps him to fly with her leg or with a broom.
Pićuka is not just my pet. He is my friend, too. I know that he has a perfect life... if we count out my grandmother.

Boris Škapik, VIII2, October 2008

My favourite animal is a dog. I like dogs because they are very intelligent, faithful and obedient. They can be taught many things and they listen to their masters.
I have a dog. His name is Lunja (=Tramp). My pet is about four years old and everybody in my family likes him. But it seems to me that I am his favourite person in the family, after all. When I come back from school he is very happy. He barks and jumps and I can see that he loves me very much. He is a part of our lives and a member of our family too. I cannot imagine my life without him.
Everybody says that my pet is not only faithful, but funny too. I think my friends envy me on my dog.
Because of him, the air is full of joy. When I am sad or worried, he makes me laugh and tries to comfort me. Sometimes, when I play with my friends and do not notice him, I can see that he is jealous.
In my opinion, every child should have a pet. All animals are very interesting and they bring happiness into our lives. They also make us better people, because we learn how to take care of them. All in all, I think that a dog is really a man’s best friend.

Marko Draško, VIII2, 3 December 2008

For my thirteenth my father gave me a beautiful little dog. I named it Lilly.
She has beautiful, big, brown eyes and white and brown, soft fur. She is absolutely beautiful. She always runs around chasing our neighbours’ cats or even her own tail. Everybody in my family loves her.
I have always wanted a dog for a pet. I feed her, take her for long walks to the park and brush her fur. When my friends come, they love to play with her. Sometimes, we go to the park where we let her run around and enjoy the company of other dogs.
I have even convinced my father to make her a wooden dog house, and buy her a number of toys to play with while I am at school.
When I got a pet, I didn’t know how many responsibilities I would have, because having a pet is not an easy thing. If I forget to feed my dog, she will be hungry and unhappy. But now I don’t find it hard to take care of her, because I have learned to be more responsible and she makes me and my family happy. We already think of her as a member of our family.

Milica Pašić, VIII2, 3 December 2008

I have a lot of pets: a cat, a dog and fifteen fish, but my favourite pet is a pet called Maza (=Cuddly). She is the brightest, sweetest, loveliest and the most skilful dog I have ever had.
When I got her I called her Maza, because she was very cute and quiet. But now she is not so quiet, in fact, she is quite the opposite. I wanted to change her name, but have not done it.
Maza is a terrier. Her fur is as black as coal. She has brown eyes, a small muzzle, very sharp teeth, and very cute ears. Her legs are very long and thin. When I got her, her tail was cut down, so she has a short tail now. I feed her well, so she is not slim. She is about one year old.
Maza is a very silly dog. Behind my house, there is a pile of bricks which she uses to climb on the roof! Can you imagine a dog on the roof?! But she is not alone on the roof. There is a tom cat, with whom Maza spends most of her time. They sleep and eat together, and they cuddle each other. It is all great until I come back from school. Then Maza starts attacking him and he runs away. I do not know why, maybe because she is jealous.
Sometimes, I am angry at her, but I still love her. The sweetest thing about her is that she always knows when she has done something wrong. In those occasions she crawls back to me, and waits for the cuddle.

Smiljana Karadžin, VIII2, 3 December 2008

I’ve had a lot of pets: three dogs, a rabbit and a turtle. The dogs’ names were Švrća (=Scamp), Maza (=Lady) and Lunja (=Tramp), the rabbit’s name was Srećko (Happy), and the turtle’s name was Gile.
Now I have a cat called Marko. He’s a three-year-old domestic cat, which means that he isn’t very clever (I’m sorry for saying that, but it’s true). He’s completely white, with one black dot on his stomach. His tail’s black with a brown spot. His head’s small and white, but sometimes very dirty. We can’t shower him, so he can’t go inside the house.
Marko’s also fat, like Garfield (but not orange). I weighed him yesterday and he has four kilograms.
There’s a strange thing about him. He doesn’t want to drink milk. I don’t know why. Marko just eats fish (when my brother and dad catch them), meat and bacon. You now know why he’s so fat. So, if someone knows something that will help me, please call me.
Marko has a girlfriend, too. That’s our neighbour’s cat. Her name’s Šaca. She’s black with three dots, on her head, stomach and tail. We know that Marko loves her, because he gives her his food.
Some time ago, Šaca had kittens. We don’t know what to do with them, so we’re going to give some away.
I love Marko and I wouldn’t give him for anything in the world.

Milica Bozitovac, VIII2, 3 December 2008
